Keelback Makes Meal of Toxic Cane Toad
This Keelback Snake was found by a Helensvale client consuming a toxic Cane Toad. Keelbacks are well known for eating Toads, but they are not totally immune to their poison. It is thought their resistance is due to their being related to Colubrids of Asia which are used to poisons found in frogs and toads in the region. Most Australian native snakes aren’t used to the toxins found in their glands and so quickly succumb to the poison.
They are not venomous but do bite and release a strong musk when threatened. They are most common in riparian areas but will live comfortably in moist suburban gardens as well.
